Initial & Annual Allied Health Competencies

HBO Technicians and Safety Directors complete Allied Health Initial Competencies to meet the minimum wound care must complete a 40 hour course followed by the HBO Chamber Operations Initial Competency.

All HBO competencies require the completion of a 40-hour HBO training course prior to beginning the HBO competency.

All wound care professionals with CNA, EMT, MA, or RT licenses must complete Allied Health Initial Wound Care Competencies, a comprehensive set of self-paced, online training on core wound care topics.

As designated HBO Chamber Operators, HBO Technicians and Safety Directors must complete a 40 hour course followed by the HBO Chamber Operations Initial Competency.  See below for course options. 

Annual Competency

Allied Health Wound Care Annual Competencies

Once per year, CNAs, EMTs, MAs, and RTs receive Allied Health Annual Wound Care Competencies, a brief refresher of the skills they learned in their initial competencies and day-to-day role.

Virtual 40 hr. HBO Tech Chamber Operator Training Course

Virtual HBO Tech: HBO103 Hyperbaric Medicine Principles and Practice, Second Edition is a comprehensive, self-paced course that meets the 40 hour requirement for an HBO Technician/ Coordinator or Safety Director to be an HBO Chamber Operator.

This virtual Introductory to Hyperbaric Medicine – Principles & Practice Course, endorsed by the American College of Hyperbaric Medicine, and intended to educate HBO technicians and licensed practical/vocational nurses caring for the patient with wounds and receiving hyperbaric therapy. This course will provide introductory knowledge in the practice of hyperbaric medicine with the objectives of:

  • Recognize the scientific basis of Hyperbaric Medicine and apply this understanding to patient care
  • Discuss the clinical applications of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
  • Employ therapeutic approaches in Hyperbaric Medicine and Wound Care
  • Identify all key operational components of a hyperbaric chamber
  • Understand operational safety and fire awareness
  • Integrate into practices the knowledge obtained through didactic lectures and clinical case studies

This course is not intended as a refresher course or for recertification. Each candidate will be pre-screened to ensure they meet the requirements for an introductory course in hyperbarics. Live in Jacksonville, FL

Live 40 hr. HBO Tech Chamber Operator Training Course

The HBO Tech and Safety Director Track is a three-day live course at the Healogics Simulation Lab in Jacksonville, FL. Through hands-on training sessions, students will learn about all aspects of chamber operations, including hyperbaric chamber equipment and operations, patient treatment, maintenance requirements, proper documentation, emergency procedures, and fire safety.

The first 2 days will focus on chamber operations. The third day will focus on Hyperbaric Safety Director training, providing all the tools needed to fulfill the role of the Hyperbaric Safety Director as defined by NFPA 99.

After Attending This Course, You Will Be Able To:

  • Apply the principles and processes of hyperbaric oxygen therapy to provide safe care to patients with chronic wounds and other appropriate indications.
  • Become a competent Chamber Operator.

Before the live portion of the course, students MUST complete approximately 30 hours of self-paced, in-depth online learning.

Travel to Jacksonville should be scheduled for the Monday prior to the 3-Day course. Return travel should be scheduled for Friday.

Target Audience: Hyperbaric Technologists and Safety Directors who are NOT currently competencied to run a hyperbaric chamber independently. A student must have a current license or certification in medicine to attend this course. Refer to Healogics policy D429, Chamber Operator Qualifications, for more information about qualifying pathways.
